A 2026 Price Guide

“How much will it cost?” is really what we all want to know early on when planning a bespoke under stairs storage project. It’s a fair question – bespoke work doesn’t come with a price list you can just look up. So I thought it was about time we actually wrote one down, based on what we see across our projects in Dorset, Wiltshire, Somerset, Hampshire and beyond.

As with anything bespoke, the honest answer is “it depends” but that’s not very helpful when you’re trying to budget, so here’s a proper breakdown of what actually affects the price, and roughly what you should expect to pay.

What affects the cost

Size and shape of the space. A simple, shallow void under a straight staircase is a much easier build than a tall, deep space under a dog-leg or winder staircase with lots of awkward angles. The more bespoke cutting and fitting involved, the more it costs.

Materials and finish. This is usually the biggest single factor. A painted slab-front cupboard in eggshell will cost considerably less than a oak shaker design. Hardware matters too, our standard quotes always include simple knobs, soft-close drawers and high quality hinges. But if you want to upgrade to  Jim Lawrence or Corston ironmongery we can do that too. We do get a trade discount for Corston and happily pass this discount on to you.

What’s inside. A single open cupboard behind a door is the simplest option. Pull-out shoe racks, coat rails, drawer runs, or a bookcase front that pulls open to reveal hidden storage all add build time and cost.

Access and site conditions. Whether we’re working around an existing staircase, in a period property with uneven walls, or building storage as part of a full renovation all affects how straightforward the job is. We can see this from the photos you provide so don’t worry, nothing gets added on mid job.

Rough price bands

  • Simple single cupboard with painted finish and slab style doors –  the cheapest option.
  • A mixture of pull outs and cabinets. Usually we opt for pull outs on the lower end and cabinets at the high end – mid range
  • Full bespoke run with oak frontage and pull-out racks, this is the highest budget option

All our storage is bespoke made for your space, we always use the best quality hinges, highest load bearing drawer runners. Everything is soft close with beautiful even gaps and perfect painted finish. No nasty wraps or plastic finish. Obviously the final price depends on your location and the size of the project, we always send quotes out first and we always stick to our quoted price.

A Carpenter’s Wife Blog

Nick and I share a passion for creativity and design. We have renovated several houses together and as I was regularly drafted in to help with his carpentry work. It was a natural step to go into business together. For many years this was an informal arrangement with me learning on my feet, including CAD, web design, tax and admin. I was itching to get involved practically so it wasn’t long before I joined Nick on-site.

We’re very lucky to enjoy our time working together. My blog is a reflection on what we are doing, what we have learnt and where we are going. It’s nice to keep a written record of our journey together and life in Dorset with three young children.
